Completion information is electronically reported to the DMV for point reduction. Additionally, a certificate of completion is mailed to students within seven to 10 business days, which they can forward to their insurance provider to save 10% off the base rate of liability, no-fault and collision premiums. Expedited certificate shipping options are available for an additional fee.
Who Needs to Take This Course?
This NYS DMV-approved program is designed for New York drivers seeking to reduce traffic violation points and receive an auto insurance discount.
To qualify for point reduction, students must have received the violation and points no more than 18 months before completing the program. The DMV allows up to four points to be reduced in any 18-month period.
Students will qualify for a three-year mandatory 10% insurance reduction after earning a defensive driving certificate. The program can be retaken every three years for discount renewal.
How Does the Point and Insurance Reduction Program Work?
We report student completion to the DMV, which will automatically reduce the point total on your record by up to four points. Points and violations will not be completely removed, but the points will not count toward penalties such as a license suspension or revocation. Allow up to 10 weeks for the DMV to reduce points.
The program includes a minimum of 270 minutes of learning, not including the quizzes. You must complete your training within 30 calendar days of registering.
Additional details about the program can be found on our Defensive Driving FAQs page.
Course Details
New York Defensive Driving courses equip drivers with knowledge to protect themselves and others on the road. Our program focuses on safety, accident prevention and confidence behind the wheel.
Our programs comply with stringent identity validation standards mandated by the NYS DMV to ensure student integrity.
Upon login, participants answer a series of personal security questions. These questions recur periodically throughout the training and must be answered within 45 seconds to continue.
Failure to answer correctly after three attempts leads to a lockout that may require you to re-register for the program.
Additionally, participants must use voice biometrics to confirm their identity. This system requires a voice sample upon initial login. At random intervals throughout the program, users must provide voice samples that are compared to the original sample.
To prevent missed checkpoints, students should log out during periods of inactivity and promptly address authentication requests before navigating away from the screen.
For more information on identity validation techniques, see our FAQs. If you’ve been locked out of the program, follow the instructions on your screen or visit our help center to chat with customer support.
Testing Requirements
Our NYS DMV-approved course contains four learning modules, and there is no final exam. Each module ends with a five-question quiz. You must pass all four module quizzes to receive the point and insurance reduction benefits.
Quiz questions are multiple-choice, and five minutes are allotted to earn a passing score of 75%. Each quiz offers three attempts. If a quiz is failed three times in a row, you will be locked out of the program. Re-registration is required to continue.
The NYS DMV requires a minimum of five hours and 30 minutes of education, not including the quizzes. It may take longer to complete the modules and quizzes.
